We were lucky enough to recently attend the 20 years of Psycho Thrill anniversary party in Cologne with special guests Underground Resistance from Detroit. Whilst there we managed to get hold of label boss Claus Bachor for a quick interview session conducted by our friend Pete Rann. A popular and progressive composer in the 1980s, he worked on several successful movies, predominantly in the action and thriller genres (Terminator Soundtrack), and pioneered the use of electronic instruments and synthesizers - almost disappearing from the mainstream at the end of the 1990s.

DJ Korrs is back with another quality set of freshly produced disco/funk tracks on the new 'Howz Town' LP. We featured his music some time ago and were very impressed with his soulful disco sampled house style which clearly takes inspiration from the french house genre and artists like fred falke, cassius, and the phantoms revenge, to name a few.

Our favourite track from the LP is the aptly titled 'disco dreams' which sounds like something you would hear playing out of a neon lit nightclub from Miami. It's always nice when you come across a quality mix, and this one entitled 'summer bass' by DJ Finesse hailing from Bristol is just that. It contains the freshest cuts by some of the leading lights within the breaks/dubstep scene at the minute including Martyn, Ramadanman and Joy Orbison amongst others. Overall a nicely mixed selection of tracks resulting in a set that definitley hits the spot in the vibes department. It was especially pleasing to see that the Chimpo dub remix of our own track; 'tears' featuring the vocal talents of MC DRS from Broke n English had been included in the list ;)

Birmingham's very own Martin Red has put together this top notch oldschool electro mix with some help from his friend Jamo. The title of the mix is 'Ice Cream' and has been mixed exclusively using vinyl only for your listening pleasure. A lot has been said recently about how some people feel the term 'electro' has been hi jacked by the more commercial producers making house music who have no real understanding of it's origins, however we can safely say this mix goes right back to the source.

In case any of you may be wandering why the mix is called ice cream?, it's because it is actually in tribute to a an old basketball term that was used around Queens, USA during the 1970's, where people from the southside used to say ice-crew, whenever someone would shoot a jump shot. A few hip hop heads picked up on the term and used the words ice cream in their rhymes. Martin and Jamo would like to say a big thanks to top hip hop historian Mike Barnes, and to Greg Wilson for the inspiration. Sean Rooney, Vindico Records

Irish techno producer Sean Rooney has been busy working hard on his music over the past couple of years. His first release came in 2009 in the form of a 3 track EP which was released on electronic label Rationalism Records. This EP was supported by techno heavyweights Pig & Dan [Cocoon], Martin Eyerer, and Someone Else, amongst others. This early support proved to be a great start for him as a producer, and he soon went on to release further music on other underground labels.

More recently he has set up his own imprint called 'Vindico Records'. The ethos of this label is "to bring forward a unique style of underground music that is constantly evolving and pushing the bounderies of electronic music we hear today". The first release on the label is by Sean himself and is entitled the 'Machine Code E.P'. Think dark minimal beats with some quirky synth sounds thrown into the mix and you get a good idea of where things are going, more releases are set to follow very soon

Akin Khan's love for music developed some years back when he moved to Germany, he was just 15 at the time. He adds; "I had just moved to another own, where I happened to pass a record shop and heard this music, it was unlike anything I had ever heard before, It was loud, and it was hard. I later discovered that it was a Jeff Mills Waveform Transmission 1. I found the sound exciting and it made me want to find out more about this style of music". After experiencing this new sound so early on, the puzzle quickly began to fall into place for Akin, and he discovered there was a name for it, 'Detroit Techno'.

He soon began to collect all the classics by top techno artists such as Robert Hood, Kenny Larkin and Laurent Garnier. In no time at all his record collection grew rapidly, and and he purchased 2 decks and a mixer and started to DJ but this was not enough. His hunger for techno soon led him to producing his own music, and creating his own unique sound. It did not take long for his style to get noticed by a range of top labels, and this interest eventually saw him release a debut lp entitled 'Meridian' on the highly respected techno label Soleil Records, and other releases soon followed on forward thinking electronic label Organica. Akin Khan - Momentum by akin khan

Scape One is the alias of prolific UK electro producer Kurt Baggaley. His roots in electronic music stem way back to the 1980's where he first appeared on BBC TV performing as a robot dancer to Africa Bambaataa's massive track Planet Rock. Other performances on live shows as a breakdancer eventually led him to forming his own Hip Hop group 'Severe Carnage' where he gained his name Scape One. Soon after Kurt began to get more heavily into the electro sound, and after purchasing the legendary TR-808 drum machine, he began to spend much more of his time making music at his home studio and perfecting his style.

Influenced mainly by oldschool Hip Hop, Detroit Techno and new generation electro producers such as Drexciya and Aux 88, Kurt began to produce with Transparent Sound and the result of this collaboration led to releases on various labels , most notably 'Freaks Frequency'. Following on from this early success, he went on to record material for a string of highly regarded global electro labels which led him to djing in cities such as New York, Barcelona, Chicago, Miami, Seattle, as well as guest appearances on a number of radio shows. The Scape One sound can be best described as synthetic funk with a futuristic forward thinking attitude.

Next we have a very exclusive feature on Slovenian based space/italo disco man of the moment Sare Havlicek. Following on from a string of excellent releases such as the italo disco hit 'Dragonflight' on Pizzico Records, and the electro/funk inspired 'Star Woman' E.P on Mullet Records, his much anticipated new album entitled 'Toscana Nights' is set to be released on the ultra cool house/disco label Nang Records on 5th July 2010. We have been lucky enough to catch up with him for a chat to find out a little bit more about his cosmic sound and what makes him tick

What would you describe as being your main musical influences?

SH: Many different influences. I remember when I was a very young, my dad used to drive us around in his car and disco music was always on the radio, I remember those wonderful times growing up and that's probably why late '70 and early '80s disco music has influenced my sound so much. Gradually I got hooked on bands like Depeche Mode and Yazoo, and I instantly fell in love with that electric synth sound, I also started listening to early Acid House and Detroit techno a lot when I first seriously started making music, and began to admire how effective a simple 4/4 beat with a thick kick drum can be on the dancefloor.

Most of your tracks have a very distinct warm analogue sound to them, can you tell us a bit about the kind of kit you are using?

SH: Mostly I'm using my ears, haha. I believe our human ears are the ultimate piece of equipment. And of course I like using analogue synthesizers, drumachines and other outboard gear like EQs and compressors. I love that analogue sound and I love to have tactile connection with instruments rather than tweaking them with computer mouse.

We understand you have your own live band, what's the story behind that?
SH: I realized that lots of electronic bands have almost 100% playback when playing gigs. We wanted to do it totally different. Everything except drums is played live. That was the idea, to make it as live as possible and being able to adapt to the response of the crowd yet at the same time trying to stay honest to the original recorded material. My humble opinion is that in addition to playing live the whole thing is quite an eye-candy with all those vintage synths on stage.
What music can we expect from Sare Havlicek in the future?
SH: I'll keep on doing music I like. I never make music because i think it will sell. New instruments trigger a change in my approach to writing and production, new things that happen in my life trigger new ideas so I'll keep going with the flow and listen to my heart and see where it takes me.

And finally if you had to choose an all time top 5 what would it be?

SH: That would be nearly impossible. Each era of my life was marked by different music. However there are definitely some songs that changed how I listened to music, tracks like 'Magic Fly' by Space, and 'From Here To Eternity' by Giorgio Moroder always inspired me with their spacey sounds... 'People Are People' made me realize that music is what I want do in my life when I was ten, LFO's 'We Are Back' and early Warp Records music got me into techno in a big way, 'Nights Introlude' by Nightmares On Wax and Daft Punk's 'Musique' reaffirmed my love for disco

Claus Bachor

PSYCHO THRILL label founder CLAUS BACHOR is one of Germany's longest standing house and techno DJs with a career that spans back as far as 1976. He originally started out by playing funk, soul, disco and high energy, but later progressed to playing acid house around 1984 and then techno just as it was beginning to come into prominence shortly after.

His long-term affiliations with Detroit techno music and also his journalistic involvement with the topic of Detroit Techno/ Electro/ Chicago-House as an author/editor over the years has made him a world renowned expert. This experience and vast knowledge of the techno genre has led him to appearing in many documentaries, the most noteable being 'High Tech Soul' which focused on the creation of Detroit techno music. Other film credits include being involved in the highly acclaimed 'We Call it Techno' documentary which focused on Germany's early techno scene and club culture.

Without ever compromising his style for the usual hype for musical trends, Claus has always exclusively been a vinyl only DJ and has never felt the need to switch to playing digital in any way, and this is something he has always been true to with every set he plays. If further evidence of his love for vinyl is needed, you only have to glance into his basement which is home to a collection of over 40,000 records. It is fair to say Claus Bachor is a true pioneer for good music, and it's no surprise to hear that he is one of the most respected and busiest DJ's on the international club circuit today.

LWTM, Marseille France

LWTM is the abbreviation for "Lady with the Machines", which is the better known name of talented synthesiser player and composer Nadine from Marseille in France. Nadine started out as a keyboard player for pop band WITHOUT SENSE, and later went on to join the new wave group NOUVELLE CULTURE where she helped to co-produce many of songs. She has recently started her own solo music project which is influenced by classic synth pop acts like New Order, U2, and Simple Minds. Steve Dolby, Georgia USA

We are continuing with the soundtrack style theme, and would like to introduce you to the excellent synth sounds of our next featured artist Steve Dolby. Steve's first interest in music came from learning to play the drums when he was only aged 13, and he began to perform with live bands soon after. He rapidly developed a keen interest in synthesisers, in particular the old classic DX7 synth. After finishing comprehensive school Steven attended Music College in Barnsley studying MIDI, sampling, mixing and studio recording. He adds;

"It was a great time, my friend and I had a state of the art studio to play with all to ourselves, and we made some great music. Electronica has now developed so much and with all the software that is available, your boundaries are unlimited. I love all types of music if its done well".

More recently Steven has just finished work on his album Pandora, which will be available sometime soon. Steven now resides in the USA with his wife, daughter and stepson.

Street War is the latest ultra cool music project from Sakura Night. This new concept has some of the slickest artwork and characters we have seen and has the music to boot. We thought it would be good to take a little time out to speak to Sakura to find out how it all came about...

So tell us how it all started then?

Sakura Night: The Street war took some time to get down, I have been working on the storyline off and on since SaKura NighT. I plan on having all my projects having something to do with each other and having crossover EPs with all of them. The music was done with 8 bit emulators, Korg Triton, and Logic Pro 8. For some reason I can bang out tracks that have 8-bit sound in them.

What's behind the striking artwork and how did you create it?

Sakura Night: All the pixel art i did with Pixen. I found the program online. I wanted to hire someone to do the pixel art because i didn't know how to do it but for some reason nobody wanted to work for me. So i had to teach myself. I'm happy with them. It's funny I posted them up on this rotten site called Pixel joint and those rude people shredded my pixel skills nonstop. I was geez guys I have been doing this for a week lay off. lol, tuff crowd over there.

Can you tell us about some of the influences for the project and what we can expect in the future?

Sakura Night: My biggest influences for the Street war project had to be Class of 1984, Nuke'em High, Warriors, Streets of Rage, Street Fighter, Final Fight. I loved watching and playing them. If you don't know these look them up. My influences for the artwork was the Street Fighter artist mostly. Now while I'm on to doing the next project "BODY SLAM" I will also be working on Savage House and Ghost Driver again. I have a lot of stuff that needs to be finished and released. Some where in between all that i would like to get my GHOST CAR label website up and running to have all my projects on one page.

Rock School Series 2

Came across some vintage footage of the BBC television series called 'Rock School' which focused its attention on new technology and its implications for the musicians of the day. Everything from synthesisers, samplers, sequencers and drum machines are all covered, as are electronic drum systems, computer hardware and software (remember this is 1987 - so this is for retro-heads only) and synthesisers for guitar and bass. There are also tips on how to make the most of the human voice, and on songwriting and arrangement. Keep your eyes open for the footage with Jan Hammer, happy watching!

Sean Rooney, Point Audio/Rationalism, Canada

Sean Rooney first spun a record back in '98 after being inspired by early acid house and Detroit techno sounds which he grew to love. He gained his club experience in Ireland playing at a range of parties, securing radio gigs and running his own successful events. After finishing a multimedia degree at university, Sean decided to leave Ireland to pursue a career in music which saw him move to Scotland and then onto Australia for a couple of years, where he acquired many new musical influences.

He later went on to set up further underground events and also began to spend more time in the studio focusing on his own production. His style is heavily inspired by underground heavyweights Dave Clarke, John Tejada, Richie Hawtin and Phil Kieran, so you can expect to find something edgy and unpredictable in his productions today. His sound can best be described as being dark, gritty & heavily tech influenced. More recently his productions have been recognised by various labels from across the globe and this growing interest saw his 'Broken Signals EP' signed to Rationalism Records, which was released via Beatport earlier this year. He has also had tracks released on Digi Records, Audiominima and more recently Point Audio.

At present he is busy working on remixes and new tracks, and with further interest from major labels you can be sure its going to be a busy year ahead for this guy. Keep your ears open for Sean Rooney music!

PH Groove, Tonite Records/Canada

Throughout the years Peter Hecher has released and recorded for some of the most respected dance labels in Canada and the USA. More recently Peter has produced music under new alter egos "PH Groove" which was his old DJ name from way back, and "Funky Instruments", which is a tribute to his first record on Canadian label Aquarius Records. Peter adds; "this first release got me inspired to continue producing. PH Groove is anything more like Italo Disco, Electro and Progressive house, whilst Funky Instruments is purely 70's and 80's disco and funk, mostly sampled. I enjoy and appreciate all kinds of music. Look out for releases in the future on my own imprint Tonite Records".

Peter started Tonite Records in 2002 and released only on vinyl with the first 3 releases. The label's sound is mostly influenced by retro Disco,Funk, Electro, Italo/Hi-Nrg, and Space Disco. The label went on hiatus cause of the uncertain vinyl market then came back as a digital label a few years later. Most of Peter's newer stuff right now is focused on the 80's era which is an era he is very familiar with after growing up and really discovering music during those years. Some of the other artists on Tonite are Shawn Ward and his FM Attack project also a new artist out of Sweden and a local Vancouver producer.

Kouros vs Jaydazed 'Nightchase' E.P

We are happy to announce the news that the Nightchase E.P will be coming out on the American label Point Audio sometime in November. In addition to our track the E.P features a tech house remix by our good friend Jaydazed, who we have featured on this blog before.

The original ‘Nightchase’ track is more in the line of a Miami Vice inspired soundtrack which takes you on a ride with Sonny Crockett in his Ferrari Dino racing towards South Beach. Jaydazed has totally stripped down the soundscapes in the original, got inside them and added his own style, resulting in a monster of a progressive techno track which will easily hold its own on any techno dance floor.

We think the ‘Nightchase’ E.P is strong testament to where we are both coming from with our musical styles; we will keep you updated on an official release date as soon as we have it, in the meantime you can check out a snippet of the jaydazed remix below, cheers!

Dominick Martin better known as Calibre is the 1st exclusively Irish Drum and Bass artist. Classically trained in violin, he dropped this for drums and began playing in various bands, before finding early Detroit techno and house. His inspiration around that time is said to wander around the likes of Kenny Larkin, Carl Craig, Juan Atkins, the Orb.

His brother introduced Calibre to drum and bass and jungle, which at first he couldn't follow the pattern as he felt it was too relentless and ‘beaty’, and so at that point he preferred four to the floor drumbeats from the US house style. From there he’s developed on slowly but surely to become an accomplished producer. Calibre has always delivered a sound that delves below the all too often unsatisfying drum and bass surface. His ability to bring a warm, natural feel to the digital landscape of drum and bass raised interest from Radio 1’s Fabio, leading to a critically acclaimed double album in 2001, entitled ‘Musique Concrete’ released on Fabio’s Creative Source imprint.

Calibre has released for labels such as Soul:R, including collaboration work under the Mist:i:Cal moniker with the Manchester duo Marcus Intalex and ST Files (together MIST). Other label contributions have included CIA, 31, Defunked, V and Critical, amongst others. He has also found time to maintain a busy DJ schedule that has seen him play in most countries across the globe alongside the vocal talents of MC DRS, which has now become a solid partnership.

Remixes have also been a heavy outlet for Calibre, with commissions from the likes of High Contrast, Badmarsh & Shri and American R&B-singer Jaheim, to name but a few. In 2003 Calibre’s own vision, Signature Records, has come to light. This imprint is the home for his own prolific studio output, offering an unprecedented freedom to experiment and release music on his own terms.

We are happy to announce that Calibre has just remixed one of our track 'Tears' featuring MC DRS that was released on Mullet Records, and we hope to share developments with you very soon. Big ups to Dominic for the feature in the meantime

Peter Guja is an electronic/new wave producer extraordinaire from Pila, Greater Poland. His tracks are full of lush ambient soundscapes, romantic melodies, emotion, not to mention synthesis that will make you reminisce of scenes from early 1980 episodes of Miami Vice, which Peter will be the first to admit provided a lot of inspiration for his sound.

ActRaiser grew up in a small city called Victoria on Vancouver island. Ever since he was a kid, he says that music and fast cars have always inspired him. He has always been a fan of cinema as well, so making music that tries to embody all of those inspirations was his goal with this production, he states; "I love classic synth masters like Vangelis, Jean Michael Jarre, and Tangerine Dream. My track Thief is actually a tribute to Tangerine Dream and the movie".

When we first came across ActRaiser's sound its made us think of images from movies like Bladerunner and Mad Max, this guy definitely creates futuristic scenes with his music and it comes as no surprise that he takes a lot of inspiration from films.

Kouros 'nightchase' Jaydazed remix

We are happy to say that a remix of our track 'nightchase' has been done by the super electro/tech house producer named Jaydazed. Our original track was more of a deep miami vice inspired style synth track with long lead ins and electro synth stabs and ambient sounds. Jaydazed has totally stripped it down and added his signature minimal tech sound to it, resulting in what we think is a monster of a minimal techno track guaranteed to damage any dancefloor. DJ Tayla/Goodlooking/Nexus Recs, London UK

Tayla grew up on the outskirts of North West London and developed an early love for Detroit house music and breakbeats. He quickly formed a friendship with another local DJ, LTJ Bukem. Then while on holiday in Ibiza he blagged his first DJ set. The decision had been made and his pursuit to become a successful DJ began. After years of hard work and networking, his talent and unique style was recognised by Murray from Dreamscape and Chris and Jay from World Dance to name a few.

Around this time Tayla started to venture into the studio, firstly with Satin Storm, they produced "Lets Get Together" which was released on Kickin Records and made an impact on the scene. This track was championed by some of the top dj's and gave him the exposure he was searching for.

Bukem then formed Good Looking Records and the pair collaborated on the label's second release "Bang The Drums". He then went on to work with more Artists, namely Photek (Bringing me Down / Soul Searching), PFM and Artemis.

As he moved further into the scene he started to make an impact with his DJ'ing at the famous Logical Progression events at clubs like Ministry of Sound, Cream and other venue's around the world.

In 1997, after various releases on the Earth Compilations and Logical Progression albums, Tayla started his own label "Nexus Records". The first release, Doc Scott's "Tokyo Dawn" ,came out as a limited edition vinyl through the Earth box set.

Then followed releases from Tayla, Alaska, Mokoto, Peshay's "Jazz Lick" and the rework of LTJ Bukem's classic, "Music". 2001 saw the release of "Soul Survivors" a Nexus compilation album that showcased the diversity of the labels sound.

After some time out of the scene, Tayla is back in the studio and is currently working on an Album. He is setting Nexus back up and also producing with "Furney". A guy who has been behind the scenes for years and is now emerging as an exciting new talent. They have many tracks already produced together which are to be released on Good Looking, Liquid V and Nexus.....

Static & Greedy, Ghent Belgium

Rapidly conquering the hearts of beat loving Ghent (Belgium), Static & Greedy are steadily establishing themselves as one of the most promising young talents around. The duo formed in January 2007 and have been building a reputation up for themselves with a string of musical achievements. In 2008, Static & Greedy fulfilled their potential by winning the Belgian Pioneer Pro DJ Contest in the electro/minimal category.

Although they were already well known for their concept Blue Monday at the famous underground club Decadance, and their regular appearances at BOA-parties in Antwerp, this success gave them great motivation to take their sound onwards and upwards. Their recognition for playing quality music eventually earned them a DJ slot at one of Antwerp's biggest New Year's Eve events for 2008 called 'GoForHappy'.

These guys like to make it clear that they don't simply play music that's popular in the charts, or in fashion, they play what they like and enjoy making people move and groove on the dance floor as this is what makes them buzz! Static & Greedy have performed in many places across Europe and have rocked crowd with their sets. From electro to fidget, minimal, techhouse to suspect pop, these guys blend it all up into a marvelous cocktail!

Glideside is a Hungarian producer from Budapest. He is also a member of Lollipop Factory, which is a collective of Hungarian producers, designers and DJ's. Arthur Oskan

Toronto Canada’s Arthur Oskan is known for his powerfully resonating dance floor releases. While much of his music is known for its intricate, driving, melodic, and moody undertones, his more recent stripped-down tracks created under his Myers Briggs alias expose a more minimal side of his musical repertoire. Representing his stylistic range, Oskan’s productions have been released on a variety of labels including Beretta Music, Restructured, Secret Weapon, Cratesavers, and Matrix Records.

As one of Toronto’s leading live acts, Oskan has performed alongside a slue of international artists including Aril Brikha, Alex Under and Samuel L. Sessions. This year Oskan is set to produce tracks for Beretta Music, Dieb Audio and Night Drive among others, and will be remixing and performing live at events in North America and Europe.

Also exciting has been the acclaim given to his recent work by many of the world’s top dj’s and producers – Funk D’Void, Los Hermanos, Chymera, and Fabric Lig. His “Resolutions” EP topped Alan Oldham‘s chart for Tresor (Berlin), and his nine-minute long “Forever” as Myers Briggs, appeared on John Digweed’s “Transmission Vol. 4“. The track has been widely celebrated by James Holden, Nic Fanciulli, and Argentine great, Hernan Cattaneo.

Mr Velcro Fastener

Mr Velcro Fastener is a Finnish electro music duo of Tatu Metsätähti (born 1977, also known as Mesak) and Tatu Peltonen (born 1977), originating from Turku. They had first met at school, and started creating music together in early 1990s. They initiated their own studio called Miletos in 1997, the same year their project was named Mr Velcro Fastener. In 1998 they released their first EP, called Wad, on their own Tie Entertainment label. The record received excellent reviews around the world, and soon afterwards they released their second EP, Robots 4 Life.

German label i220 Music released their Tie Entertainers 12" and Mr Velcro Fastener's debut album Lucky Bastards Living Up North, which later led to them touring central Europe late 1999. In 2000 Electric Appliances Remixes were released and also one of their most successful 12"s, Who's Gonna Bend.

World renowned DJs such as Pete Tong and Dave Clarke have supported Mr Velcro Fastener's tracks. 2001 and 2002 saw the releases of the Otherside 12"s and also an album consisting of both these releases. 2003 saw the release of a retrospective album Thales of Miletos, featuring unpublished material recorded between 1993 and 1996. UK's Electrix Records released the 12"s Velcropopvichy (2003) and Gone Mad (2005). During 2005 they published their own track 'The Flock' on their own label Stars-Music. Finally In February 2006, they released the brilliant album entitled Telemacho that showcased their sound fully.

Up next we have the deep electronic sounds of Taho. His music is well known for it's hypnotic drive, jazzy chords, and hi tech soul atmospherics fused with dynamic and powerful grooves. Discovered by Laurent Garnier in 1995, Taho signed two wonderful Detroit influenced Eps on the legendary French label F Communications that had already signed music by the likes of St Germain, and Mr Oizo. He was often referred to as the French version of 'Mad Mike' from Underground Resistance by the press. Shortly after further releases followed on labels such as Josh Wink's Ovum Recordings, and Dutch techno label Delsin. His music has also appeared on the Ministry of Sound and Global Underground compilations thanks to Dubfire, and François K.

Eventually Taho moved on to create his own label Lumina, which drew the attention of Carl Cox who compiled Taho's techno killer track “Mutant fights the creature” in Dance Valley 98. The track is still charted 10 years later and played by the likes of Derrick May, Dimitri, 100% Isis and many more international DJs!

Over recent years Taho has performed all over the world in cities like Paris, Amsterdam, Hambourg, Amersfoort, Utrecht, Delft, Rotterdam, Brussels, London, Sao Paulo, Vancouver, Toronto, Moscow, Papeete (Tahiti), Barcelona, Oviedo, and Lille.

Taho is creating a new sound, giving a new life to Deep Techno, Hi Tech Jazz, House and Electronica, proving that Spiritual and Melodic Techno can make you sweat on the dance floor and he knows how to do that like nobody else.

We would like to introduce you the excellent Detroit techno influenced sounds of Manuel Steer, better known as 'Night Orchestra'. Night Orchestra started making music at the age of seventeen and hasn't looked back since. It was due to the introduction of the early electronic music pioneers such as Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, from his older brother, that helped to shape the direction of his musical style.

After becoming hooked on the Detroit sound, Manuel took every chance he could get to DJ, and also to learn how to mix records with precision. However this was not enough, later on he became heavily immersed in music production and technology. It was this creative hunger that resulted in his first release back in August 2008 on Italian netlabel 'Eye Records'. During October 2008, his track entitled 'Chapter 4' was broadcasted live on the German radio show 'Berlin Box' which was very well received by it's listeners. This exposure helped to provide him with a strong platform for future Night Orchestra projects.

As for now, Night Orchestra has further releases planned and is busy making new music, whilst remaining focused on establishing his own sound. When asked about his plans, Manuel replied "I am just as motivated to do well now than i have ever been before, i have further projects in the pipeline as well as some interesting collaborations'.

Subtone/DSCI4/Citrus/Cyanide, Montreal CA

Up next coming straight out of Montreal in Canada, we have the technical production wizardry of David Russell better known to many as Subtone.

With regards to his musical background, Subtone played the piano and flute for 3-4 years as a kid, which enabled him to learn the basic knowledge of scales and chords. Growing up, and throughout his early teens in New Zealand, he was heavily immersed into Hip hop, and got gradually exposed to the music of artists such as the Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy. Around the age of 15 or so, his best buddy at high school started giving him drum and bass mix tapes tapes of his older brother's radio shows (48 Sonic on bFM - the same station State Of Mind have their Next Level show on 10 years later).

Subtone recalls "'I'd never heard anything quite like it and from that moment, I was well and truly hooked". It wasn't long after this that Subtone started scouring the internet on a 56k modem for ways to make beats on a 233 MHz, 32 MB RAM, crap box. he got hold of the first version of fruity loops and a cut down version of cubase called 'cubasis' and away he went.

He moved to Montreal, Canada in 2002 to pursue an engineering degree but dropped out due to lack of interest in his studies and an all consuming addiction to music production. In 2003, he was approached by Spinal, local dnb hero and co-owner of Metaphor Recordings. They both moved into a small cottage in the Quebec country side, isolated from distractions, and got busy in the studio. The pair had a couple of releases together in early 2004, but after Alpha Magic (the distributor) went bankrupt, Subtone moved back to Montreal and started focusing on getting his own solo material signed.

Ironically enough, the first labels to pick up on Subtone's solo tracks were based in New Zealand. Random Recordings and Bulletproof's Cyanide Recordings snapped up a few tunes for release in early 2006. These were followed up with releases on Revolution and Syndrome, and Subtone also started collaborating with good friend Tobi Chamberland also known as 'Stalker'. Their first two tracks were picked up by C4C for release on their label Explicit. Over a period of a year or so, the duo have put in countless hours into their work and eventually decided to put all their collaborations under the one name, 'Fortress'. Dave and Tobi have since released on Citrus, Dsci4, Disturbed, Symptom, and there are plenty more lined up for 2009.

Showing their diversity, the duo have also released a 3 track Nu School Breaks EP on Love Breakz (label that put out Noisia's Hustle Athletics EP) in 2008. which was very well received within the breaks community. Subtone himself has also been busy experimenting in other genres like breaks and electro.

Subtone music has gained support from the likes of Ed Rush, Noisia, C4C, Black Sun Empire, Concord Dawn, Bulletproof, State of Mind, Loxy, Vicious Circle and more.

When asked about his future plans Dave replies "I have some special stuff planned for this year, but Id prefer to keep the details under wraps for the time being. I will say that you can expect more than just singles from me, and a lot more on the remixing front".

Now we are going to top off this section with another very exclusive feature. Next up we have the drum and bass Jedi Master himself and one of the most innovative, and prolific producers the scene has ever seen, Mr Conrad Shafie, better known to most as DJ 'Blame'. Blames story to musical success began around 1990 in Luton, where he recorded the chart topping early rave track 'Music Takes You'. This was to be his first solo project and was instantly signed to the legendary drum and bass label Moving Shadow. It all kicked off for Blame from that very first track and he adds "its all a blur now, but somehow I’m still here today touring the world djing and doing my thing"!

Around 1998 whilst touring & recording for Good Looking Records, Blame started his own signature label 720 Degrees which he still runs, and has since produced music for Metalheadz, Charge Recordings, Moving Shadow and even more recently for the mighty Hospital Records. He also launched 720 Degrees offshoot label 'Blame Music', which is an imprint label aimed at getting back to the beats! Conrad adds 'It will allow me to focus on pushing a more diverse and experimental sound, while stripping down the layers and going back to what got me hooked on this music from day 1'. The first Blame Music release consisted of the 2 deep and mysterious tracks entitled 'Hiro' and 'Apocolypto'. Both are available for purchase now.

His brand new track 'Because Of You' (feat. Selah) is out now! and has had huge Radio support. Zane Lowe dropped it as the 'Hottest Record In The World' in December 08, Sara Cox selected it as her 'Single Of The Week' in January 09 and it is now currently playlisted on daytime BBC Radio 1 and 1 Xtra. There seems to be no stopping this guy at the moment. An album has to be on the way, and we urge you to keep your sights locked on Blame and 720 Degrees music....

We're keeping it 720 Degrees orientated with the music and up next we have another veteran producer of drum and bass, Dave Reynolds better known amongst his peers as 'Third Rail'. We at Kourosmuzik can personally recall going out to gigs and hearing DJ Blame drop some of the baddest futuristic drum and bass beats we had ever heard back in the early days, and remember asking him (whilst he'd be mixing sometimes haha) "what's this one"? to which most times he would reply ohhh "thats a Third Rail tune"! so i think you get the idea as to what school of music this guy has come from.... If your looking for old school breaks, bleeps and heavy bass tones, then Third Rail is your man...

More recently Rail has been busy with his own crew 'The Dark Judgez' making drum and bass, breaks or completely weird (but always bass/breaks driven) futuristic sounds. This collaboration has resulted in the creation of drum and bass techno laced bombs such as 'Resurrection', to the more dub and breakbeat orientated sounds of tracks like "Edge of Time". We are keeping it underground with our next featured artist. Kevin Wilkins better known as 'PLEX', is no newcomer to the world of drum and bass and has been producing since the early days trying to perfect his own style. Having been drawn to both the atmospheric and darker styles of the genre, he finally settled on a sound that was picked up by drum and bass innovator, and close friend DJ Blame, who first signed 2 of Plex's tracks entitled 'Speedfreak' and 'New Episode' for his own label 720 Degrees back in 2002. After taking some time out from the scene, PLEX has re-surfaced with an arsenal of killer tracks and is ready to make his mark with his own label Darkvibe Recordings.

PLEX classes himself as a producer caught in between two worlds of drum and bass madness, fusing raw jungalist break beats with eerie futuristic synths and fx creating his own unique noticeable style which is now being widely recognized and highly rated on the D+B circuit. He states; "I think the whole concept for my music works ok because I am always floating between my favorite styles of D+B," explains Kevin. "I feel that this way makes my tunes sound different every time because there is so much more you can do combining styles then sticking to one specific sound."

As for the future of Darkvibe Recordings, PLEX hopes to continue to produce high quality recordings to support the darker sound of drum and bass. He is keen to build up a solid relationship with the buyers of Darkvibe music to the point that when they see the label logo on a new release, they will know that it will symbolize music of the highest quality. With his label distribution pretty much in place, PLEX is back and he means business. Definitely one to watch out for now and for the future. lose sight of this guy at your own peril, you have been forewarned....

Think it's about time you were introduced to my partner in crime and one half of Kourosmuzik, Gavin Blane, also known as BHX. When we are not in the studio making synth music under the guise Kouros, Gavin can be found locked away by himself making some of the slickest drum and bass beats that your ears will hear. His music is supported by the dj elite of drum and bass, which has resulted in him getting constant plays of his own tracks such as 'Cloned' on Sole Recordings by DJ Fabio on BBC Radio 1. He has also had support from DJ Sappo on BBC Radio 1 Xtra, who played Gav's gritty techno laced track 'Curzon', which was released on label Abstract Inc. BHX music can be found in the boxes and dj sets of artists worldwide from a range of musical styles. Gavin's star is definitely one that's rising fast.

His most recent track entitled 'Black Gold' has seen him team up with DNAudio label boss Squire, and his new imprint Resolute Music. A firm favourite with DJ Die, Fierce, Teebee, and Bailey, BHX's 'Black Gold' will finally make it onto vinyl backed with 'Old Haunt' by New Zealand's Teknik.

We are very happy to present you with an exclusive feature on the legendary Chicago DJ and producer, K Alexi Shelby from TecSoul Recordings. We have been exchanging pleasantries through cyberspace with one another for a while now, and were more than chuffed when he agreed to appear on our blog as we love his music.

K Alexi is one of Chicago's true heroes and cited by many as a pioneer for the city's sound. At a young age of 12, K was already moving in the right circles befriending worldwide legends like Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy, whilst frequenting the famous Warehouse. K's upbringing in Chicago in the 70's and 80's meant he was exposed to a range of genres and different styles of music including Stevie Wonder, Prince, Curtis Mayfield and David Huff - these same names would prove to be the roots of influence. K's first pressing 'Essence of a Dream' is still regarded a classic today.

A tally of successful hit records remixing and collaborating with other artists resulted in his talents being sought by a diverse range of artists like The Pet Shop Boys, Dj Deep, Derrick May, Angel Abi, D-ROLAND, Paul Johnson, Dj Gregory, Kenny Dope, Mr Lee (who produces for R Kelly), Gene Hunt, ROLANDO, Maurice Joshua, MARSHALL JEFFERSON, Marc Romboy, Mark Grant, Larry Heard & Robert Owens, TjenTjen, Dave Angel, Felix Da Housecat and Will Smith.Ect

LA Synthesis

Wave Effect is the alias of Carl Grant (pictured), who was originally born in Aston in Birmingham, but now resides in East London. Carl met Tony Gallagher and started jammin machines back in 1990. In 1992 after a considerable amount of time trying to create a sound which was uniquely their own, went on to form LA Synthesis.

Their track entitled 'Agraphobia' on Mr C's Plink Plonk imprint (with its trippy hookline and Kenny Larkin remix), became a huge fixture in London's clubs, and an instant universal techno classic. Many live performances followed, including a triumphant appearance at the Fridge in London alongside legendary Detroit producers Kenny Larkin and Stacy Pullen in 1995. More recent performances have included playing a live set at the Bloc Festival which you can check out below.

Next from the duo, came the CMI Wavesequence single on the A13 label. Alongside the Frozen Tundra EP on French label Shield records and Blue Basique release Reich/Zebra. A backlog of material finally started to appear, including an album Matrix Surfer, which was originally written for Plink Plonk records but was later released only on cd for Shield records. The duo also released the more electro based Harmonic Disassembly in 1997 on Global Communication's Universal Language label followed by a release with Carl Coxs offshoot Ultimate Breaks Doidy dawg. In late 1999 Gallagher split from the group to pursue a solo project under the name Linear Systems. Carl under the guise Dolphin Wave Effect, later to be known as Wave Effect, featured the first release for West London based Groovetech called Maiden Flight.

Carl continued to write and produce music on his own and has collaborated with other artists including keyboardist Andy Danezi, studio engineer Daniel Mcnamara, and programmer Karl King. So that is the history, the past and the beginning. With new projects and remixes hitting the streets soon, listen out for the future of Wave Effect. Watch out for releases in the coming months of some featured Myspace tracks....

Ras T Weed, G Stone Recordings

To say Ras T Weed is a multi talented musician is putting it lightly. He is a vocalist/producer/singer/songwriter and a veteran performer in the dub, electronica and roots music scenes across the world. We are very much looking forward to collaborating with him at some point ourselves but this guy is tougher to get hold of than the president, due to his heavy schedule of touring and performing at live shows and festivals all over. He also splits his time between living and working in Birmingham and Montpellier in France, we told you he was busy..

Originally known for his work alongside DJ Dick from the legendary big beat pioneers Rockers Hi Fi, Ras T Weed later went on to work with stalwarts of electronica Kruder & Dorfmeister and Tosca. He has also picked up the mic and performed for Daddy G from Massive Attack, and more recently has toured regularly with Makossa & Megablast from the world renowned G Stone Recordings in Vienna. Live Performances have seen him play at the World Wide Festival alongside Giles Peterson in Sete France which was featured on MTV, to taking over the main stage at the famous Big Chill Festival in the UK, also not forgetting his energy fuelled performances at the Coachella Festival in New Mexico USA.

The story does not end there for this guy....proving his diverse music abilities, Ras T Weed has more recently crossed over to drum and bass and has found himself working alongside A list producers Mistical on a number of tracks that have seen releases on Soulr and have been supported by a string of top dj's both on the club circuit and on BBC radio 1. In case you were wondering, Mistical comprises of drum and bass headliners Marcus Intalex, ST Files and Calibre.

We could carry on talking about this guys achievements forever but there is simply too much to say and too little space to say it in. It's safe to say that Ras T Weed earned his stripes a long time ago...

Dominic Sagona/USD, Redlands USA

Up next we have professional skater/producer/DJ and all round general pimp daddy Dominic Sagona. Dominic is regarded by his peers as one of the best professional skaters on the world circuit today and has often been credited as being one of the sports top amabassadors and innovators for taking roller blading to new heights.

Dom rides for skate company USD and has an array of sponsorship deals, which have allowed him to travel across the globe to skate at various places such as all over Europe, Korea, Russia, and more recently to the UK to showcase his skating talents.

When he's not travelling around the world being a daredevil and meeting his many fans, Dominic puts all his time into producing drum and bass and dubstep and djing out whenever he can. Gigs have seen him play at the Syndicate drum and bass nights in Los Angeles to as far as 'Breakstorm' in Barcelona where he has rocked dancefloors with his rolling tech style and diverse track selection.

Roeg du Casq/Soulthump, Birmingham UK

We would like to introduce you to the super smooth sounds of Darren Farr better known to people in the music world as Roeg du Casq. Now if you didn't know this guy was from Birmingham and you heard his beats, we would say the first thing that you would associate his style with would be something straight out of the east coast of the USA. It comes as no surprise to learn that he draws his musical influences from the likes of Pete Rock, Masta Ace, J Dilla, and other associated Hip Hop legends.

As well as being busy producing new material and releasing tracks worldwide, Darren also runs Soulthump which is a collective of Birmingham MC's, and DJ's focussed on pushing the more soulful side of Hip Hop. Other projects have seen him collaborate with MC's such as Soulbrotha from Texas USA for which he has produced the 'Ezeekiel Hannai'album for and also a remix for Othello hailing from Portland USA.

Not being one to limit himself to any one musical style, Darren has also ventured into producing drum and bass and has enjoyed several releases on DJ Nookies Strictly Digital imprint as well as a release on the german atmospheric drum and bass label Camino Blue Recordings on the 'Silver Cycles' compilation.
